Rates

Rates vary, largely depending on the subject and location (for in person tutoring). Please contact me to discuss logistics and availability.

Payment

For online tutoring, payment is required in advance of the lesson, although not before meeting me first. If I am unable to attend a scheduled meeting, you will be given the option to reschedule or to be reimbursed.

For in-person tutoring, especially when tutoring is on a regular basis, I generally accept payment after.

Methods of payment which I accept:

  • Interac e-Transfer (both online and in-person students in Canada)
  • Cash (in-person)
  • Wise, formerly TransferWise (students outside of Canada)

Scheduling

Scheduling is done by contacting me in writing: Email or text message. I can share my number for WhatsApp or Signal once I know who you are. Once we have mutually agreed on a date and time, I will add it to my calendar.

Note: My local time zone is Pacific Time (PDT or UTC-7 from 2023-03-12 to 2023-11-05; PST or UTC-8 from 2023-11-05); the same as Vancouver, BC, Canada. My general hours of availabilty are listed.

Appointments start at 60 minutes and increase in length at 30 minute intervals. If a student requires a brief break of 5 minutes or less, I will pause the clock for up to 5 minutes. Full bladders tend to interfere with one’s focus.

Cancellation

Once an appointment is scheduled, you are required to provide at least 48 hours notice if either cancellation or rescheduling is requested. If the notice period is less, the appointment and scheduled time will need to be reimbursed at the set rate. For students & families with a long-term relationship to me, I may, at my discretion, offer greater flexibility with rescheduling.

Communication Tools

For online tutoring, I am flexible and willing to engage via several video-calling tools:

Meeting Locations

For in-person tutoring, it is best that we meet in a public location, ideally where parking is free or easily accessible by transit. This could be:

  • Public libraries
  • University libraries
  • University study area
  • Park picnic tables (weather permitting)
  • Cafes (you’re buying the drinks; I enjoy black tea)

For students with whom I have developed a working trust, we may meet at the student’s home if suitable.

For a line-up multiple students in a particular area, or for an extended study session (2+ hour sessions) I am often willing to travel to meet at more distant locations (e.g. UBC’s Vancouver Campus). If free parking is not available, the cost will be incorporated into the rate.

Groups

For groups of students seeking a tutor, I generally do not charge per student. I charge based on the effort and time required of me. For groups of 2-4 university students who wish to share a tutoring session, my rate will typically be marginally greater than for 1-on-1 tutoring.
